Husky Sledding is the ultimate joy-ride – an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience – unless you become a Musher of course. Participants of this unique sport are treated to some of nature’s most incredible sights as they speed through icy landscapes and snow-capped forests. It’s the most environmentally friendly, exhilarating way to travel and is perfect for those with a love of adventure and excitement.

The Basics of Husky Sledding

On a husky sledding tour as part of a holiday abroad, you will be expected to drive the sled. This means controlling the dogs with a series of commands and steering with your body. As daunting as it sounds, husky sledding is actually surprisingly easy to pick up, and many techniques are similar to those used when skiing. Here are a few tips to bear in mind before you go:

  • It will be extremely cold. Below freezing temperatures are expected, so very warm clothing is a must. Think snow suits, ski goggles, hats, gloves, thermal underwear – the works!
  • To get the dogs moving, the most popular command is ‘Hike!’ Other commands include ‘Gee’ (turn right), ‘Haw’ (turn left) and ‘Whoa’ to stop.
  • A reasonable level of fitness will make husky sledding that bit easier. As with skiing, it can be completely exhausting and hard on the muscles.

Where to Sled

Husky sledding tours are available across Iceland and trips can last from a few hours to several days. A city break in the wonderful Reykjavik is perfectly complimented by a trip out into the beautiful countryside and a husky sledding adventure.

After you’ve experienced the tough work of Musher’s life, pay a visit to the Blue Lagoon. This stunning geothermal spa is just 45 minutes away from Reykjavik and will provide some much needed rest and relaxation. The warm temperatures, startling blue waters and unique spa treatments are extremely popular with tourists and natives alike.
